Lying, Fantasy, and Strategy in Dementia Care
Sugatani Yasuyuki

Abstract
In this article, I¡¯d like to deal with the communication between the residents and caregivers in elderly care facilities. The theme of this article concerns three key facets: communication with/for older people, gerontolinguistics (gerontological linguistics), and health care communication. I would like to explain the relation of these words from the viewpoint of gerontology. Health care communication can be analyzed according to its 15 features: 1) Institutional organization, 2) Asymmetric relationships, 3) Differences in viewpoints, 4) Intentions, 5) Indivisible concurrence between caring and communicating, 6) Compliance gaining and compliance resistance, 7) Confirmation or ascertainment, 8) Directive guidance, 9) Interpersonal addressing, 10) Reactive response, 11) Nonverbal or alternative communication, 12) Geriatric and psychiatric viewpoint, 13) Guessing or conjecture, 14) Haste when pressed for time, 15) Lying.
